Week 9 - The Next Level (Literally)

This week was a feverish work for all of us as we continued with the momentum we had coming off of the alpha build. I personally founds myself in a very busy week with assignments from other classes, so I couldn't get too much done. However, what I did manage to do was an absolutely necessary step in creating our next level of the game: Ember's Rise.

Ember's Rise Tileset

The main piece of work I managed to get done this week was the tileset for our game's second level, Ember's rise. Being a combination of what was originally two levels, Ember's rise's tileset features a combination of the two original level's themes: Ash covered ruins and actively burning chamber. I started by creating an ash covered brick base from using the brick pattern from the Tower Base level tileset. Then, I added cracks with magma seeping out of it to give it the actively burning feel. The tileset also features thinner jump through platforms as well as ramp tiles. The thinner jump through platforms were created based on playtester feedback that the existing version of the tiles didn't make it obvious that you could jump through them. The thinner platforms will hopefully give the players the indication that they can jump through them, but this will need to be tested later. The ramp tiles on the other hand were made by the request of Nathan who said he wanted to test something regarding the enemies. I am still not exactly sure what he wanted to test, but I was happy to comply anyway.

Tower Base Tileset Adjustments

The second thing I managed to get done this week was adding the aforementioned additions to the tilesets to the Tower Base level's tileset. Seeing as how this level was the one we playtested on and the one we currently have fully implemented in terms of level design, it would only make sense to add these additions to the tileset. I expect moving forward that the tileset for the third level, the Vermillion Summit, will follow the same template as the previous two tilesets including these new additions to them.

Reflection

Overall I think this was a pretty good week of work for all of us. While I didn't exactly get as much work done as I wanted to, I did manage to get two of my goals from last week done so I suppose I should be happy about that. For the next week, I am going to focus on refining and creating the last assets required for the first two levels, and getting a start on recording and creating sound effects. As such, my goals for this week are as follows:

  • Create the chandelier moving platform for the Tower Base level

  • Create and finalize a refined version of the Ashen statue

  • Begin recording and creating sound effects

That's all from me for now, til next time.
