This week the entire team shifted to their highest gears, as we put out the beta build and approach the final build of the game. For me, this meant pumping out any and all remaining visual assets required to complete the look for the Tower of Ash.
Vermillion Summit Tileset
The main accomplishment of my week was completing the tileset for the final level of
the game, the Vermillion Summit. In addition to all the basic tile types included in all of the other levels, Vermillion Summit also features a new type of platform: falling platforms. While functionally very different from the exisiting platforms, visually all these platforms are simply lighter shaded versions of the normal platforms. I may change the visual even further if I have time, but for now the shade difference should suffice.
New Level Assets
The rest of my week was dedicated to creating additional assets for all the levels of the game. The main new feature being the doors and lever assets for the new mechanic of the same name. I inteend to give the door a bit of an opening animation in the coming week, but for now they both function as requested by the programmers. I also managed to create a boss door asset to be interacted with at the very end of the Vermillion Summit level, to transport the player into the boss room. I actually reused the Ashen Vessel's head for the lock-like ornament on the front , giving a bit of a thematic and narrative connotation as well. This one shouldn't require much of an animation, but I will create one if requested by the team.
Sound Effects
One more small thing I did this week was clean up some remaining sound effects. As mentioned in my previous blog post, I was in the process of recording the remaining sound effects for the game. After finishing last week's post, I managed to complete 3 more sound effects to get me to 17 of the required 20 sound effects completed. These were a little lower priority on my list going into the beta after I found out sound wouldn't be implemented, but are something that will definitely need to be finished before the final build of the game is created.
Reflection
This week was probably my most solid week of work, and the same can likely be said for the rest of the team. As we approach the final build and iteration of our game, we've entered the stage where we're trying to figure out just how much more we can implement within the time given. So to get the Tower of Ash to even greater heights, my goals for this next week are as follows.
Complete and refine all required sound effects
Create any remaining visual assets required in all the levels
Create story stills to be played at the start and end of the game if I have time.
That's all from me for now, til next time.
