Week 8 - Beyond Catching Up

This week was a hectic but solid week of work for all of us, as we approached the submission of our alpha code. For me, this consisted of catching up on the work I couldn't do last week, while also creating new visuals required for our presentation in lecture.

Tower Base Background

The first thing I completed this week was the background for the tower base level, which I had created a concept for last week. The final result is quite different from the original concept, as I realized the concept I had come up with was quite different from the concept art we had created earlier. After referencing the concept art and conversing with Nathan, I created this new version of the background which was implemented in our alpha code. The background is slightly larger than the average room, and loops seamlessly so it can be used throughout the entire level. While this works for the sake of our alpha code, I know that Jonathan requested the torches be their own entity, and that some of our playtesters said some more variety would be nice. These will both be things I'll be working on in the next week, if not the coming weeks.

Preliminary Chozo Statue

The second thing I completed this week was the preliminary version of the chozo statue that provides upgrades to the player. This version of the chozo statue, which I learned in our game is called the ashen statue, is actually a draft version I made earlier this week. I had planned to refine it further after discovering that it was quite different from the original concept art, but the team decided to just go with this draft version for the sake of the alpha code. Therefore I will be refining the design and reuploading it likely within the next week.

Presentation Poster

The final thing I worked on this week was the poster for our upcoming in-lecture presentation of our alpha code. The poster is meant to imitate the style of a Nintendo Switch game box, and is actually using the dimensions of Switch game box art. This so that if we want to in the future, we can print out the poster and actually put it in a Switch game box and use it as a prop for an event like the end of semester showcase. The poster will likely be updated with new images on the "back side" of the box as we develop more parts of the game, and as such have more material to show.

Reflection

Overall I'm pretty happy with how myself and my group managed to work this week. I not only managed to catch up with the work I had from last week, but managed to finish the new work I had been given this week. Since I managed to catch up with my work, my goals are now renewed for the sake of working towards the beta code now, and as such are as follows:

  • Refine Tower Base level's assets based on playtester feedback.

  • Start working on the tileset for the Ashen Falls level

  • Create and record sound effects if I have time

That's all from me for now, til next time.
