Week 7 - Slow and Steady

This week was a fairly slow week of work for all of us, as we all seemed to have other commitments that conflicted heavily with this week's schedule. I myself found myself in an unforeseen circumstance in my personal life that required my consistent attention for the week. As such the work I produced this week was little in volume, but definitely required for the steps leading to our alpha code.

Dash Sprite

The one piece of work I did manage to complete in full this week was the sprite for the Kindling's dash ability. The absence of a dedicated dash sprite was something that was noted in our playtesting sessions the weeks before, and since I was in in charge of the movement animations I was tasked with supplying one. Originally I had planned to make this a full on animation, but Jonathan assured me that we only needed a sprite as the movement itself was quick and the animation wouldn't be that noticeable. If I have time, I'm considering adding a cape and flame flutter as well as a flame spark effect to make the whole thing look more clean during the polish process towards the end of the project.

Tower Base Level Background Concept

The other thing I managed to do this week was create a concept piece for the tower base level's background screen. My original goal was to have this screen completed by the end of the week, but I simply could not find the time to. So instead, I used the existing tileset I had created for the level to create a rough concept of the screen so I would have a better idea of what I needed to make. The idea is that the screen will have pillars in the foreground, holding up the room the player is in, while the outer walls of the tower with hole-like windows can be seen in the background. Judging by the concept I made, while the background tiles look fine, I will likely need to make new dedicated tiles and textures for the pillars as well as the windows so the entire level feels more cohesive in terms of appearance and texture.

Reflection

This week was definitely the slowest week of work for me so far, and as such I'm going to need to catch up heavily with the work I have tasked to me in this next week. In addition to this, the team has also given me a list of sound effects I can start recording and creating, as I was put in charge of that at the start of the project. Therefore, my goals for this coming week remain largely unchanged from last week and are as follows.

  • Complete a preliminary version of the chozo statue

  • Complete background environments for the tower base level

  • Start recording and creating sound effects if I have time

That's all from me for now, til next time.
