Week 3 - Moving Forward

This week, the team really focused on pushing forward elements required for our first milestone, and made good progress in making an actual playable prototype. For the art team including myself, that meant finalizing all the player animations required for said prototype.

Run Cycle

My first order of business this week was finishing the run cycle that I had started the week before. In addition to the base I had created last week, I added cape and head flame movement as well as the sword layer. The cycle is designed to start with a dash so it doesn't look too staggering when the player starts moving from still, but is indeed a run cycle and is designed to loop as pictured in the second image above.

Wall Jump Cycle

The second major thing I did this week was complete the wall jump cycle. The cycle pictured above will be used in the game when the player is sliding down any kind of wall, and when they jump off it to gain diagonally vertical momentum. The cycle is designed to connect seamlessly to the fall state cycle I did last week, then loop for as long as the player is on the wall, and finally back into the fall state cycle after the jump.

Hurt Sprite

The last thing I worked on this week was a hurt sprite for the Kindling. According to Jonathan, this hurt sprite is planned to be used whenever the player takes damage and will be displayed briefly while flashing white to signify said damage. I have also created two frames of easing from the Kindling's idle state in case we want the hurt state to be less staggering and we require the easing into the animation.

Reflection

This week was a very solid week of work for the whole group, despite the fact that we all had a decent amount of other classes and commitments to attend to. While I was not able to start on the art and animations for the final boss this week, now that Jonathan has finalized the design for it that is definitely something I'll be working on in the coming week.

My goals for next week are:

  • Start and hopefully finish all the final boss animations that are required of me

  • Start on environment design and get some sketches out if possible.

That's all from me for this week, til next time.
